At least 300,000 people in Sudan’s Unity State are at risk from water supplies contaminated by oil, according to a German aid agency. The group Sign of Hope (Hoffnungszeichen, in German) released a new survey yesterday after finding what they claim are life-threatening metals in wells near two major oil fields in Mala and Thar Jath.
Mozambican authorities are accused of failing to investigate and prosecute police officers suspected of unlawful killings. South Africa’s deputy police minister Fikile Mabula yesterday defended his force’s shoot-to-kill policy, just days after a police officer shot dead a three-year-old boy. Greenland’s ice sheet is melting at a faster rate than previously thought, a new study indicates. The loss of ice in Greenland in the past three years has contributed to an annual rise in sea levels of 0.75mm, according to the study, published in the journal Science.
