The UK’s international development secretary Andrew Mitchell is considering cutting more than 90 aid commitments made to developing countries around the world, according to documents leaked to the press. The newspaper The Observer on Sunday published extracts from a leaked memo from Nick Dyer, the director of policy at the department for international development (Dfid), to Mr Mitchell. The document lists potential cuts to be made in government funding for international development projects. In another email leaked to The Observer, Mr Mitchell allegedly agrees to keep only eight out of over 90 projects. The commitments to be cut include a central emergency response fund for global disasters and a pledge to double support for global education. Dfid confirmed that all programmes are currently under review but said it does not comment on leaked documents.
