Angola Court Jails Police Officer for Unlawful Killing

Adebayo Somuyiwa

A court in Angola’s capital Luanda sentenced seven police officers on Monday to 24 years in jail for the unlawful killing of eight men in 2008. During an operation against local gangs in the crime-ridden neighbourhood of Sambizanga, the policemen ordered a group of alleged criminals to lie face down on the ground before shooting them in the back. One of the victims identified two of the police officers before dying on the way to hospital. Judge Salomao Filipe said the killings were “unjustifiable” despite the officers’ belief that the men were criminals. Twenty four years is the maximum jail term for any crime in Angola. Local media described the conviction as the first of such kind in a case of police brutality, according to news agency AFP.
