China Offers Scholarship to Namibian President’s Daughter and Eight Others
By Adebayo Somuyiwa
The Chinese government has allegedly awarded scholarships to the children of nine top Namibian government officials, including the daughter of the president, to study at universities in China. The allegations were first made in Informante, a free tabloid in the Namibian capital, Windhoek. Local reports say a local youth league had called on the officials whose children accepted the scholarships to apologise to the nation and withdraw from the scholarships. The case has sparked anger among civil society groups and fuelled controversy around deals between the Chinese and the Namibian governments. Five out of six high school graduates in Namibia do not go on to university, according to figures published in the New York Times.
