Congo Refugees Not safe to Return
By Our Correspondent
Congolese refugees returning to their homes in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are at risk of being trapped in the violent conflict between rebel groups and government forces. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has warned refugees they should not try to return. The UN agency has been trying to relocate over 2,000 Congolese refugees after the closure of a makeshift camp in Burundi. They have refused to move to another camp in Burundi, fearing its proximity to a rival Congolese community in Tanzania. UNHCR assures the new location is safe and urges refugees not to cross the border into the Uvira region of South Kivu, DRC, where their safety cannot be guaranteed and assistance is not available.
