Corruption Holds Resettlement Funds in Kenya

Seyi Oduyela

Government corruption in Kenya has reportedly kept resettlement funds worth millions of US dollars from internally displaced people who were supposed to receive them, according to local media reports. The Standard newspaper published an article this week claiming that government officials misused the names of genuine IDPs to embezzle over 2.6 million US dollars. The funds were meant for people displaced by the post-election violence in 2007, who are now living in the Nakuru Pipeline IDP camp. The IDPs claim government officials used various excuses to deny them their money. The Standard revealed that over 500 people at the camp have not received their compensation funds yet. An investigation has been launched.
