By Tayo Adelaja

Sudanese refugees who fled conflict in Darfur to seek safety in refugee camps in Chad face high levels of rape and violent assault, a report by Amnesty International claims. The report, published today, accuses the international community and United Nations peacekeeping forces in the area of failing to protect Sudanese women and girls who fled to eastern Chad. The attacks,

from villagers, soldiers, family members and aid workers, are happening both inside and outside the camps, the report said. Around 250,000 Sudanese refugees currently live in 12 camps in Chad. Meanwhile, aid workers were today preparing to move around 28,000 Sudanese men, women and children from a refugee camp in eastern Chad said to be infiltrated by rebels. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), which has expressed concerns that Sudanese rebels were using the site as a base, welcomed the move.
