Darfur Tribes Sign Peace Deal
By Adebayo Somuyiwa
Two rival Arab tribes in Sudan’s conflict-ridden Darfur region signed a peace deal on Monday, according to the United Nations. The African Union-UN Mission peacekeeping force in Darfur (UNAMID) and the local government brokered the agreement between leaders of the Misseriya and Rizeigat groups. UNAMID hopes the deal will end a series of revenge attacks that have left more than 200 people dead since the killing of two Misseriya members in March. Access to scarce natural resources is usually the underlying cause of tribal disputes in Darfur, according to the UN. Around 300,000 people are estimated to have died in fighting between government forces and local rebel groups in the past seven years. A further 2.7 million people are estimated to have been displaced.
