Ethiopia Cracks Down on Non-Governmental Organizations
By Ganiyat Adeyemo
The number of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Ethiopia has dropped by more than 50 per cent in the past year as a result of a new law that cracks down on civil society. An article by news website AfricaNews published on Tuesday quotes a report by Ethopia’s Ministry of Justice which claims that 1,867 NGOs have vanished from the country. The law, which was introduced in January 2009, required all NGOs to re-register. According to the report only 1,655 of a total of 3,522 NGOs had reregistered with the ministry. Human rights activists worldwide criticised the legislation for crippling civil society in Ethiopia. The ministry’s report argues that the figures show many of the NGOs were not operational, according to AfricaNews.
