Ethiopian Opposition Alleges Intimidation
Ethiopia’s opposition parties have accused the government of arresting almost 450 of their members to stop them from running in elections set for May 2010. One of the parties, the All Ethiopia Unity Organisation, also claims seven of its members have been murdered in the last year for political reasons. Ethiopia’s government has denied all accusations. The four parties released a list of the alleged political prisoners’ names to news agency Reuters. Government authorities have said they will investigate the matter. However, Ethiopia’s head of information, Bereket Simon, said a preliminary examination indicates the opposition members had been engaged in crimes. He claimed the accusations are an attempt to discredit next year’s election, which analysts believe will be easily won by the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front.
