Ethiopian Prime Minister Vows to End Dependence on Food Aid
By Johnson Eniku
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi unveiled a five-year development plan on Wednesday that he claims will end the country’s dependence on international food aid. Mr Meles’ plan envisages economic growth of between 11 and 14.9 per cent. It also aims to double the country’s agricultural output by 2015, which would allow it to feed its own population and export surplus production. Ethiopia is one of the world’s biggest recipients of foreign aid and nearly 10 per cent of its population relied on emergency food assistance in 2009.
