The Constitutional Court of Gabon has confirmed that Ali Ben Bongo won the disputed presidential elections of August after a vote recount. Chief justice Marie-Madeleine Mborantsuo announced the result last night on national television. Nine opposition candidates claimed the poll had been fixed and asked for it to be annulled. The court agreed to a recount but prevented representatives of the opposition candidates from observing it. Bongo is expected to be sworn in as president later this week. Several people were killed in violent riots after the announcement of Bongo’s victory in early September. He is the son of the late president of Gabon, Omar Bongo, who ruled the country for 41 years until his death in June.
