Gambian President Threatens Human Right Workers

An online petition has been launched demanding that the African Union moves its human rights commission headquarters from Gambia after President Yahya Jammeh threatened to kill human rights activists. During a televised speech earlier this week Jammeh accused human rights defenders of being saboteurs and vowed to kill them and their associates. He also spoke yesterday at the United Nations General Assembly in New York where he called for the organisation to stop developed countries from abusing and exploring Africa. If the Assembly fails to act he threatened the continent would take action to liberate itself. Human rights groups have accused Jammeh’s administration of harassing and persecuting journalists since he came to power in a coup in 1994.
