Greenpeace to Prioritize Humans

The new international head of environmental activists Greenpeace said today he would make protecting human life more of a priority for the group from now on. South African Kumi Naidoo, who fought against apartheid as a teenager, took over the position today. Mr Naidoo told reporters he vowed to connect Greenpeace’s current focus on the environment with human concerns, especially climate refugees. He said human existence on the planet is “fundamentally under threat” as 300,000 people are estimated to die every year due to climate-related impacts. Mr Naidoo also criticized US president Barack Obama for failing to make environmental issues a priority since his election. Naidoo is the first African to head Greenpeace since the group was founded in 1971.
