An Ethiopian court has sentenced five people to death on charges of planning to assassinate government officials. Thirty three others were sentenced to life imprisonment at the hearing on Tuesday. Prosecutors said that those convicted were part of the Ginbiot 7 or May 15 group led by Berhanu Nega, a US-based Ethiopian dissident. The group disputes Ethiopia’s election results in 2005. Lawyers for the defence said they will appeal. Mr Berhanu was previously arrested after being elected as mayor of Addis Ababa in the 2005 elections and jailed for treason. Since being pardoned in 2007 he moved to the US.
