The number of internet users in South Africa increased by 15 per cent in 2009. A new report released on Thursday by technology and research company World Wide Worx states that 5.3 million people in South Africa now use the internet. The managing director of the organisation, Arthur Goldstuck, predicts further strong growth in 2010 and that South Africa could have six million internet users by the end of the year. The rise follows a stagnant period between 2002 and 2007, but changes in regulation have allowed small internet providers to enter the market with more competitive packages. However, overall internet penetration in South Africa is only 10 per cent, still far behind developed countries.
