Journalist Goes to Jail in Tunisia for Assault
By Tayo Adelaja
A Tunisian court yesterday sentenced a journalist to six months in jail for assault following a trial that has been criticised by international rights groups. Taoufik Ben Brik has written articles for the French media and is known as a vocal critic of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who has been in power for 22 years. The 49-year-old journalist was arrested in October shortly after national elections that granted the president a fifth term in office. Ben Brik was accused of damaging a woman’s car during a quarrel in the street and engaging in physical violence that resulted in injuries. He denies the charges and claims he was framed. Media rights group Reporters Without Borders, Amnesty International and the French foreign ministry have all criticised his arrest.
