Kenya To Count Gays
Kenya is set to carry out a census of its gay population in June 2010 as part of the government’s HIV and AIDS prevention programme, Nascop. Homosexuality is illegal in Kenya and can be punished by up to 14 years in jail, which has stopped many gay people from coming forward. The head of Nascop, Nicholas Muraguri, told the BBC it is unlikely the count will be accurate, but argued it will still be important to promote targeted interventions, such as providing condoms. The census will involve gay men identifying each other. Officials will also carry out HIV tests and hand out information on safe sexual practice. Gay people are an isolated group in Kenya and lack information about HIV and AIDS, according to Mr Muraguri.
