Leading Nigeria Oil Rebel Disarms
By Tayo Adelaja
The last prominent militant in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta region has agreed to give up arms. The move by faction leader Government Tompolo, who heads the main armed group in the western Delta, came after two other commanders laid down weapons on Saturday. The government amnesty deal aims to end years of attacks on the oil infrastructure and kidnappings for ransom in the region. The groups claim they began fighting in 2006 in order to ensure a fairer distribution of the region’s oil wealth. Some commentators believe it is they will hand over all weapons.
