Libya Expels UNHRC
Tayo Adelaja
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Tuesday it had received a note from Libyan authorities ordering it to close its office in the country. UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said no reason was given for the expulsion. The Libyan government has yet to issue an official statement on the matter. Fleming said that Libya does not have a national asylum system. As a result, she said the local UNHCR office in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, is solely responsible for registering and processing thousands of refugees and asylum seekers. These are mainly Palestinians, Iraqis, Sudanese, Somalis and Eritreans who have fled their countries hoping to reach Europe.
