Mozambique Accused of Unsolved Police Killings
By Tayo Adelaja
Mozambican authorities are accused of failing to investigate and prosecute police officers suspected of unlawful killings. At least 46 people have been unlawfully killed by the police in the southern African country since 2006, according to a new report released by human rights group, Amnesty International, today. The report urges the government to launch impartial investigations into the killings, make autopsies mandatory in police shootings and pay reparations to victims’ families. Mozambique’s police has rejected the accusations and said the report is biased. Mozambican officials claim police officers guilty of unlawful killings have already been convicted and sentenced to over 20 years in jail.
