The Nigerian government has revoked a law that required a police report to be filed before gunshot victims could be treated in hospital. The lift follows the murder of an editor at Nigeria’s Guardian newspaper who was attacked by unknown gunmen at his home in Lagos on 20 September. Bayo Ohu died from gunshot wounds after the hospital reportedly delayed emergency care to wait for a police report. Nigeria is one the most violent countries in the world and has high rates of gun-related crimes. Officials revoked the law, which had been in place since the 1980s, over concerns about a rising death rate from bullet wounds.
