Rwanda Boosts Food Security

A Rwandan government programme to boost agricultural production has successfully improved food security, according to officials. A new report by the government-run Rwanda Agriculture Development Authority says 2009 saw increases in major food crops such as maize, cassava, potatoes and rice. The government’s strategy included distributing seeds and fertilizers, making changes to farming methods and a land reform programme. Last year’s increased harvests have helped to stabilise food prices, according to Rwanda’s National Institute of Statistics.
