Sudan Expels Darfur Aid Staff

Sudanese authorities have reportedly expelled five humanitarian workers employed by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross from West Darfur state. The head of the joint UN/African Union peacekeeping mission (UNAMID) in the region, Abdallah al-Fadil, told reporters on Monday that the heads of the UN’s refugee and food agencies in West Darfur, as well as the head of the refugee agency in Zalengei, have been asked to leave for the capital Khartoum. An ICRC’s spokeswoman told news reporters that the organisation’s head of offices in El-Geneina and Zalingei had been recalled following a “confusion with the authorities over a field trip to Darfur”. The relationship between Sudan and international aid agencies has been tense since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes in Darfur in 2009, prompting the expulsion of 13 aid organisations from the country.
