Sudan: Oil Risk to Water Supply
By Seyi Oduyela
At least 300,000 people in Sudan’s Unity State are at risk from water supplies contaminated by oil, according to a German aid agency. The group Sign of Hope (Hoffnungszeichen, in German) released a new survey yesterday after finding what they claim are life-threatening metals in wells near two major oil fields in Mala and Thar Jath. The agency’s vice-chairman, Klaus Stieglitz, told reporters the chemical composition of water samples from oil well drilling pits were nearly the same as those from contaminated water boreholes that supply local residents with drinking water. Sign of Hope claims it first found signs of contamination in the area in early 2008. They say they have warned the government and the local oil consortium about the problem, but have not received any replies so far.
