Sudanese Newspaper Closed

By Johnson Eniku

Sudanese state media reported on Tuesday that an independent newspaper has been shut down for campaigning for the semi-autonomous south Sudan’s secession. The Sudanese Media Centre, which has links to state security, said the Al Intibaha was “suspended indefinitely” for strengthening separatist tendencies. Local reports indicated that other publications have also been targeted by government censorship. News agency Voice of America quoted a member of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), Rabie Abdulatti Obeid, who said the publication of newspaper articles advocating for secession was a violation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed in 2005. Southerners are due to vote in January for a referendum under the CPA that will determine whether South Sudan should become an independent country.
