Over 50,000 Burundian refugees forced to flee to Tanzania in 1972 have been repatriated, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced yesterday. Around 55,000 people fled Burundi in 1972 as a result of violent ethnic conflict. The final 5,000 Burundian refugees that remain in Tanzania are expected to return to their home country in the next few months, the UN agency said. Their repatriation over the past 18 months is the result of cooperation between the Tanzanian government and the UNHCR, which is providing temporary shelter for the refugees once they reach Burundi and has helped to settle landless returnees in special rural integrated villages. The UNHCR also supports the peaceful mediation of disputes for land.
