Togo Parties Form Coalition

Johnson Eniku

Togo’s main opposition party will join a coalition government for the first time, according to one of its veteran leaders. Gilchrist Olympio announced on Thursday that the Union of Forces for Change (UFC) will participate in the country’s next government with the ruling party, the Togolese People’s Rally, under a power-sharing agreement. The UFC will get eight ministerial posts under the deal, Olympio said. The announcement comes nearly three months after the opposition alleged irregularities in elections won by President Faure Gnassingbe. He has been in power since his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, died in 2005 after ruling the country for 38 years. Olympio is the son of Togo’s first president, who was murdered in 1963 two years after being elected.
