UK Gives Uganda $4.2 Million for Contraceptives

The United Kingdom announced on Thursday that it will spend over 4.2 million US dollars supplying contraceptives to Uganda. The UK’s Department for International Development (DfID) said the funds will be used to provide 45 million condoms, plus contraceptive implants and pills. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) – which together with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) provides around 95 per cent of contraceptives in Uganda – will administer the pledged money. The UK development secretary, Andrew Mitchell, noted that over 200 million women around the world do not have access to contraceptives. Earlier this week Mitchell cut funding for development awareness projects arguing that the money needs to be redirected to “frontline services”.
