United Nations Failing in Democratic Republic of Congo

Military operations backed by the United Nations in eastern areas of Democratic Republic of Congo have failed to neutralise Rwandan rebels, according to a leaked UN report. The report claims actions by the UN-backed forces have actually made the humanitarian crisis worse. The document claims mineral resources are being plundered and that there has been a new surge of rapes and killings. The report was leaked to several international press outlets today and is due to be discussed by the UN Security Council. It also accuses the Congolese army of funneling weapons to rebel groups that are supported by millions of dollars in gold and other minerals smuggled out of the country.
