The United States has delayed at least 50 million US dollars in aid to Somalia for fear United Nations contractors may be funneling American donations to Al-Shabab, a rebel group with growing ties to Al Qaeda, UN officials have said. The UN has warned that Somalia is going through its worst humanitarian crisis since the government collapsed in 1991. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced by violent conflict and 20 per cent of Somali children are suffering from malnutrition, as pervasive droughts aggravate hunger.

Emergency food stocks are expected to last only four more weeks in Somalia, UN officials said. Meanwhile, at least 12 people are believed to have been killed in heavy fighting which erupted yesterday at Kismayo, a southern port, where Islamist groups Al-Shabab and Hisbul-Islam are struggling for administrative control.
