US Visa Ban for Kenyan Officials
The United States government has threatened to ban 15 prominent Kenyan officials from travelling to the US for allegedly blocking political reforms, the US ambassador to Kenya Michael Ranneberger said yesterday. The warning sparked concerns from Kenyan foreign minister Moses Wetangula, who argued that reforms are being implemented regardless of what some individuals think about it. The reforms in question were proposed after the wave of violence that killed around 1,500 people in Kenya, following disputed national elections in December 2007. They are designed to fix the discredited electoral commission, end arbitrary rule, stop human rights abuses by police and military and prevent corruption. Mr Ranneberger did not give any names but said the list included ministers, members of Parliament, permanent secretaries and other prominent officials.
