Call for Change in African Aid
By Tayo Adelaja
Humanitarian assistance in Africa is failing to match the needs of vulnerable communities by being “too reliant on reactive disaster response”, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has said. In a report published recently the group urges international humanitarian organisations and governments to rethink their strategies for funding and delivering aid to the continent. The current focus on responding to immediate disasters or chronic emergencies like food security does not provide durable solutions for vulnerable people in Africa, according to the report. Instead it calls for more money to be directed towards building community resilience to ensure Africans themselves can engage and overcome the challenges affecting them.
