Nokia Siemens Network Revs Subscriber Data Platform

Nokia Siemens Networks this week released a new version of its subscriber data management platform that introduces a new common data model that makes it easier for service providers to aggregate user data and profiles and deliver new customized services.

Nokia Siemens Networks One-NDS 8.0 release, announced this week at Supercomm, allows providers to deploy new applications built on top of the directory server as separate modules without disrupting the underlying data store, said W. Stuart Jones, head of sales-Americas for NSN’s converged core subscriber data management product.

That approach compares to past approaches where customer data and service logic was tightly bound. By adding an abstraction layer between, the two, One-NDS 8.0 enables providers to roll out new services in weeks rather than months or years, as well as offer more personalized services based on user profiles, Jones said. “The goal is really to make the network much more subscriber-aware,” he said.

For instance, Movistar Argentina uses the platform to consolidate its legacy subscriber data across its legacy voice, DSL and other services – allowing it to much more rapidly introduce new services, Jones said.

Nokia Siemens Networks acquired the technology underlying the One-NDS server when it bought data management specialist Apertio last year. The vendor claims 80 customers for the platform, including seven new ones this year in the U.S. alone. Projects range from simple data consolidation efforts to more customer-facing projects that use more consolidated data stores to analyze churn problems, better target new services and simplify the provisioning of new offerings. The repository can also interface with billing and charging platforms to improve the functionality of those systems.

The One-NDS is a full directory server, similar to an LDAP-based enterprise server but built to meet the scalability and response-time requirements of carrier networks. Using standard off-the-shelf hardware, it can be scaled up to serve over 250 million subscribers on each platform.

In addition to the common data model, the new version includes ecure multi-tenancy and service hosting scenarios that allow operators to develop new business models with third-party application and service providers.

The One-NDS platform is part of Nokia Siemens Networks subscriber data management portfolio, which includes applications for HLR, HSS, Mobile Number Portability (MNP), Equipment Identity Register (EIR), profile solutions (Authentication, Authorization & Accounting, or AAA), Bootstrapping Server Function (BSF) and identity solutions.
