“Human Traffickers Exploited 2.4m People,” UN Report

More than 2.4 million people around the world are currently being exploited by human traffickers for sexual or forced labour, the United Nations said on Tuesday. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) launched a new report which estimates that human traffickers in Europe make up to three billion US dollars a year from the trade. Exploited people are often coerced by violence, debt and confiscation of passports, the report said. It also found a “strong correlation” between the nationality of people trafficked and that of their recruiters. Just over half of people trafficked in Europe are from the Balkans or the former Soviet Union, while 13 per cent are from Latin America and five per cent from Africa, according to the report.
