Greenland’s ice sheet is melting at a faster rate than previously thought, a new study indicates. The loss of ice in Greenland in the past three years has contributed to an annual rise in sea levels of 0.75mm, according to the study, published in the journal Science. By comparison, between 2000 and 2006 the annual average was around 0.46mm. The researchers attribute this acceleration to recent warmer summers. They used weather data, satellite readings and models of ice sheet behaviour to analyse the annual loss of 273 thousand million tonnes of ice in Greenland. The study was the result of collaboration between scientists at several US-based and European institutes.
