UN Calls for Migration Deal
A new UN report urges governments worldwide to promote long-term policies to attract migrant workers whose skills can help spur economic recovery. Cutting some of the bureaucratic red tape, lowering passport fees and boosting cooperation between host communities and migrants are among the recommendations. The United Nations Development Programme also notes the world’s poorest people are those least likely to move to a foreign country. Nearly one in seven people worldwide is a migrant, according to the report. About 60 percent of migrants move internally or between developing nations. Movements within Asia account for nearly 20 per cent of all world migration.
